Franklin was laid out in 1823. One of the first settlers, Samuel Herriot suggested the name. He was a great admirer of Benjamin Franklin. In 1834, pioneering Baptists in the area founded Franklin College, now one of the oldest colleges in Indiana. In 1842, it became the first college in the state to admit women. Franklin College is a liberal arts college, enrolling 1,048 students from 20 states and seven Indiana counties. Famous attendees include Indiana Governor Roger Branigan, actress Marjorie Main and Film director Robert Wise.

It is also known for the Indianapolis Zoo, White River Gardens, Broad Ripple Village and more. It is just a twenty-five minute drive from Franklin to the heart of Indianapolis, the state capitol.
Franklin is also only 90 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky, home of Churchill Downs, Louisville Slugger Museum and the authentic sternwheeler boat The Bell of Louisville that churns its way down the Ohio River.
